Silly kiddos!

Lexi

Unsanitary, I know...

"Mom, take a picture of this."
By the time I realized what I was taking a picture of, water was
squirting everywhere.

Mel gets the most use of the pool. She's my water baby.

Sista, sista, Boom!

Dance moves in the pool.

Nice one, Mel.

Toe touch... kind of.

Yep...

Lance and Austin.

"Hey, Aunt Carol, take a picture of me."

They really are best friends.

My handsome, brand new driver.

Lance and Austin jumping in together.

Well, we had a blast with Todd, April, Lance, Adam, and Lexi.
I can't believe I didn't get one picture of my mother and father-in-law.
We'll see them today for a wedding in Indiana, and I plan on snapping away!!
Happy Saturday!!

Rocking' around the porch

I have been painting all kinds of stuff lately. I did this rocking chair in a few hours. It went from a very weathered black to a fun salmon. I'm looking forward to testing it out.

list checking

Well it seems life is always busy around here.
My expectation of summertime or maybe what I dream about is not really close to my reality.
My reality is a giant mix of summer projects, baseball games, friends visiting, a short vacation, more projects, patients to see, and swimming to be done.

My hubby and I have made a fairly long checklist of things to do around the homestead, and today the list was being checked off like crazy! Today alone we have:
*finished painting the porch (thank you Pam for helping with that ginormous task!)
*rearranged the basement
*deep cleaned Austin's room with major help from him
*sorted through things from the girls' closets because Shawn put new closet systems in last weekend
The girls spent several hours getting their room back in order today
*spray painted the wicker furniture on the front porch
*spray painted a chair for the boys' desk
*primed a rocking chair to be painted a fun color
*cleaned the swimming pool
*did the laundry
*cleaned the cuttings from the bushes Shawn has been trimming (the kids did that job :0)
*that's enough!!

Why is our list so long you ask?
Because in exactly 11 days 30 plus family members will be coming to stay with us for a reunion.
We have family coming from New Jersey, Indiana, and even Texas.
We'll have some sleeping in tents, in sleeping bags, and anywhere else they can find that is slightly comfortable. The time we spend together is a blast and we're looking forward to it.
If you want to get things done around your home, plan a big party or reunion. You'll git 'er done.
Woo-hoo!! I love it when things get spruced up around here.

And in other news...

(Cooper - 10 y.o.)
The twins played for the Marshall Indians and just recently finished up their season.
They came in first place and enjoyed just about every minute of it. It's been so hot around here that some of the games were a little uncomfortable.

(Grant - 10 y.o.)
You guys were awesome! Dad and I enjoyed seeing what skillful ball players you have gotten to be.

Cooper was one of the pitchers.

Grant is quite the hitter. He hit a homerun or two during his season.

Braaten played volleyball for USA Michigan 14U and learned so much!
Volleyball is just fun to watch and we couldn't get enough.
I take that back! When there are 3 weekend tournaments in a row, you have enough.
It was a blast watching her and her best friend, Renae, play.

We opened up the pool season with a party during Memorial Day weekend.
What a great way to start the summer!

Thanks again, Pam, for painting with me. I'll help you with your next paint project.
Just say the word!

I love the American flag that Shawn put up at the pool this year.
We had a wonderful Independence Day (a few days early) at our friends home, the Root family. Every year they plan one of the biggest gatherings and firework displays for all of us to enjoy.

On July 4th, Shawn's parents, and my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, and their 3 children came to visit us. We had a wonderful, wonderful time.

Maddie and Melanie had the pleasure of dancing at C.O. Brown Stadium in early June.
They had their official dance recital on June 16th and both danced beautifully. Maddie and her family just relocated to Florida and we miss their family so much. Every year they would also have the most amazing Independence Day celebrations. We thought of them so much through the holiday weekend.

Terri and Lizzy enjoying some pool time.
Liz, I love you.
And boy do I miss you.

My niece, Lexi, is beautiful in this photo. She was just here visiting
on the 4th of July.

Cooper and I cuddling during a field trip to Saugatuck. We were learning about the sand dunes and Lake Michigan.

This is Phyllis.
Is she not one of the cutest kittens you've ever seen? She is so skiddish. Every time I go near her with my little kitty cat voice, she runs for the hills. I'd like to have her as an indoor cat, but the fear of cat pee anywhere scares me a little. My husband just wants to know where I plan on putting the cat litter. I have no idea. I don't know what the most sensible place is. Until I can answer that question, she'll stay outside. She is one of 10 kittens we have had to find a home for. We still have 2 waiting.

A couple of weeks ago we went up north to Petoskey to visit Smax and Barb.
We had a grand time seeing them and also visiting Mackinaw and Traverse City.

Well, that's it folks, I've got some painting to do.

Thanks for taking the time to visit here. I write about once a month these days, but always desire to write a whole lot more. Keep coming back. :)

5 Question Friday

Rules for 5QF: Copy and paste the following questions to your blog post, answer them, then watch for the linky post to appear Friday morning and LINK UP!

Oh, and remember (pay close attention...this is the important one)...HAVE FUN!

1. What were you scared of as a kid?

Have you ever seen the movie "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" For some odd reason I saw it when I was 8 or 9 or younger maybe. That is a creepy movie with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. It was about 2 sisters and the one sister, Bette Davis, had a severe case of jealousy toward her beautiful, talented sister. She hated her so much that she managed to set her up to have an accident in which she became crippled. Yeah, scary, I know. In order for my siblings and I to creep each other out, we would say something like, "Baby Jane is under your bed" as you were walking by it. In your mind you thought she was going to quickly reach out and grab your feet and pull you under.

I found this on the internet -

Plot Summary for the movie:
In a tale that almost redefines sibling rivalry, faded actresses Blanche and 'Baby' Jane Hudson live together. Jane was by far the most famous when she performed with their father in vaudeville but as they got older, it was Blanche who became the finer actress, which Jane still resents. Blanche is now confined to a wheelchair - Jane ran her over with the car while drunk, even though she has no memory of it - and Jane is firmly in control. As time goes by, Jane exercises greater and greater control over her sister, intercepting her letters and ensuring that few if anyone from the outside has any contact with her. As Jane slowly loses her mind, she torments her sister going to ever greater extremes. Written by garykmcd

Are you scared now? I'm scared just typing about it!

2. Do you sleep well in a hotel?

Yes, as long as I have my pillow and the bed is fairly comfy and my hubby is beside me.

3. If you could meet any celebrity, dead or alive, who and why?

This is my fluff answer... Carrie Underwood. I love her music and think she is absolutely beautiful. Beth Moore would be great to meet. I think God uses her in amazing ways through her writing.

4. It's a hot summer day. Do you prefer to be pool side or at the beach?

Either works for me. I love swimming in our pool because it's convenient, the surroundings are pretty and if I need something I can just go inside, but going to the beach is an extra special treat.

5. What is your favorite summer dish?

I like when Shawn grills out, I love watermelon tons, and I like cold pasta salads.

17 more days

Sometimes you don't realize how much someone means to you until it's time for you to part.
And it's one thing if you part for a little while, maybe even a couple of years as was the case when we moved to England and then moved back, but it's quite a different story when you move away for good.

The Jaques family has been a solid presence in our lives, and in the lives of many at our church, and they will be missed more than they know.

Mike, Liz, Maddie, and Luke are some of our best friends. We have a lot in common, and our families have done so much together.

We served together in AWANA
They've taught our children in the children's ministry at VLC (our church)
We have studied God's Word together
We've gone to the beach together, swam in our pool at pool parties, gone to each others' kids sporting events
Our girls dance together at IHS
We have had countless girls' nights out
Coffee talks
We've shared meals together
Went for ice cream together
Celebrated birthdays together
We've shopped together (even our husbands did their Christmas shopping together and bought us matching turtlenecks and vests) Oh yes they did!
We've laughed together
Cried together
And just did life together.

Life in these parts will just not be the same without them.
We trust God has a great plan for them and the people they will meet, work with, and serve the Lord with have no idea how blessed they are about to be.

Jaques family, we only have 17 more days with you, and Mike, even less with you as you have started your journey a little sooner in order to provide for your family.

It caught me off guard as I started to cry with Liz yesterday when I least expected it.
It hadn't felt like a reality to me until that day when the lump in my throat formed, and the tears came and I scrambled to find more moments together in the scant days ahead.

But as the words of Jeremiah 29:11-12 go:
"For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you."

They are such words of comfort for each one of us that know Him.
Thank you, Jesus, for friendship, for life, for change, and for your goodness.

Mike and Liz,
You'll need to call upon Jesus all the more in these coming days and the days beyond that as you figure out where God wants you to serve, whom He wants you to befriend, which ministries He wants you to serve in, which home you'll eventually buy, and which people, even strangers, He'll have you reach out to.

Be bold for Him, trust Him, and know that everyone here will be lifting you up in prayer, thinking of you, missing you, and knowing full well that you are fulfilling His destiny in the way only you and your family can.

We love you so much!
Carol, for the Busse Seven
