Doing major catch-up

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are well and are enjoying some serious summer fun. We got back from our cruise on Sunday which was amazing. I'll follow up with loads of pictures soon. Putting all of these photos on our Mac is making it very slow. I think we are going to back them up soon onto an external hard drive to free up space.

The laundry situation was out of control and I am about 3 loads away from finishing up. With the small washer, it makes 8 loads turn into about 14!! No kidding. I am getting it put away with the help of the kids and we're finishing up school, too. Braaten and Melanie are the only ones still taking tests. Austin has a few book reports to do over the summer and I have the task of ordering new books from Abeka and Sonlight. Cleaning up and reorganizing the school room is a must. Doesn't that all sound like so much fun? ;-)

Gotta run. Just wanted to say hi and let you know that I am slowly catching up on your blogs.

Blessings to you.

Oh, I am so excited to see your cruise pictures! And I can't imagine about the laundry, I would surely hate it if 8 loads turned inot 14! Yuck!

Carol,

Here is a crack up for you. I got so long winded my comment couldn't be posted because it is too long. I am going to copy and paste it into two comments.

Kat

Is that a new picture of you and your sweetie? It is a good shot...but I don't remember seeing it before.

Glad you back and can't wait to hear all the details and see lots of pics. Did the kids think it was all you thought they would? I bet they did...how could they not???

I wanted to let you know the shred is available on Amazon.com. I am not sure of your shipping situation. I know my sister has Amazon prime and has everything she can't get in Italy shipped free to her AP/FPO box. I don't think you all are military, though, so it may be pricier for you to get. The video itself was less than $10.

Good for you...to know your week spots and try to control the sweets and such. That is half the battle sometimes.

I often tell my hubby it is so unfair. When I was young and skinny as a rail (I weight 98 pounds after 3 kids) I didn't like sweets or junk food at all. Never craved it...oh, those were the days. When I developed diabetes (before diagnoses) I began craving sweets so bad...should have known something was up. Now, if I don't have any I am fine...but if I have dessert today, tomorrow I will be craving something a little sweet and before you know it, there is a little sweet in the afternoon and a little dessert at dinner and... I know the pysiology of it and that makes it easier for me to overcome. But how I wish I had eaten all I crave now when I didn't have to watch what I eat. :)

Hummus with veggies sounds delicious. That is one of my favorite lunches. My kids really go for that stuff too which makes it easier on me. A lot of people tell me their kids won't eat this or that and so they don't eat as well as they should because they are trying to meet the desires of their family. Of course, I was raised to serve what we serve and they eat it or go hungry...that is just a little rambling on my part...anyone love the hummus. The fish sounds delicious, too. That is one of our main protein sources...we eat fish 4-6 nights a week. It is full of the good stuff and if you can find a good quality fish (which is getting harder and harder where we live...much of it is imported from chinese waters and full of toxic stuff so I really had to shop to get a source of clean fish) than it has nothing you can object to, either.

As far as reading about diabetes...online I can not recommend enough the American Diabetes Association website. It is a trustworthy source for a wealth of current information. Many things on the internet are not as accurate or up to date. They also have an excellent monthly publication that is relatively inexpensive. I believe you can read that online for free.

For actual books you might check out the Real Life Guide to Diabetes by Hope Warshaw. There is Diabetes For Dummies...and so many more. The key to learn to count carbs and balance your carbs, protein and fats. I actually, took some training classes with a dietician when I was first diagnosed and I found it to be so clear and easy to understand... because many people think well you can't have that or you can't have this...and it is not that at all. You can eat anything...if you keep it to a reasonable portion, make it fit into a meal plan and remember that first and formost food is for fuel and if you aren't getting the right foods you aren't getting the fuel to go and be successful and have the best quality of life you can have...

OOPS! Got on my bandwagon again. Sorry about that. This is just something I feel so passionately about. I watch the world destroying themselves and wasting their lives in sickness and tiredness because they don't care what they put in their bodies...let's face it...is it worth being too fat to get off your scooter and enjoy life around you so you can eat a whole package of oreos in one sitting...when you could really have one or two and be just as satisfied?? Is years of suffering only to end in death from some disease worth it to drink cokes all the time and stuff your face with fast food???

Obviously, you don't think so since you are working to do better, but especially here in America...most people don't care...and if we get beyond the personal implications...there is the unbelievable strain on our society in medical care and costs for disease that could in large part be PREVENTED by good diet and exercise practices.

soap Box again...OK...I will let you go now :)

Glad you are home!!!

PS... I know nothing of geography... what is your proximity to Loundon??? I will be coming through in the fall and thought... if time and flights and transfers allow... might be fun to have some coffee and chocolate cake:)

Hi Carol...Welcome home! I'm looking forward to seeing lots of pictures. Good luck with the laundry...that can go on the 'do not' side of my mental list of things I do/do not miss about England.

I'll send you an email one day soon (I'm STILL on the hotel compter) and let you know how the transition is going. In a word or two or three-up and down : )

In some funny way I feel like you were a neighbor I moved away from, like you were just down the street. Hope we will get to meet in person one of these days...Cheers!

Carol,

In all my going on I forgot to mention that Miriam Nelson has a great book called Strong Women stay Slim. In here she does an excellent job of outlining essentially a diabetic diet only she doesn't call it that. You can get her books very inexpensively on Half.com.

I'm glad you're back. I missed you!!! Glad you had a great time and looking forward to the pictures!

My friend used Sonlight but I never have. I use a little of Abeka and a little of Bob Jones, with Apologia for Science.
